Charging Ahead: How Pune and Chennai Became India's EV Battery Talent Corridors

Battery technology firms are scaling R&D teams faster than the local talent market can supply. We map where the talent is coming from.

By Srikrishnan Ananthanarayanan, Founder at Adviti

The EV battery technology cluster spanning Pune and Chennai has grown from a handful of research labs to dozens of well-funded ventures and OEM-backed R&D centers in under three years.

Cell chemistry specialists, thermal management engineers, and battery management system (BMS) software developers are now among the most contested profiles in Indian engineering.

Much of the available senior talent has come from adjacent industries (automotive powertrain, consumer electronics battery design, and renewable energy storage) rather than from EV-native backgrounds.

Employers who broaden their search criteria to include these adjacent profiles, paired with structured onboarding into EV-specific domains, are filling roles 30-40% faster than those holding out for direct-experience candidates.
